Two rules sit here. Rule 12.1 is the machinery, and it is long. Rule 12.2 is one sentence saying a plaintiff facing a claim may use the same machinery.
The idea is simple even though the rule is not. If someone is or may be liable to you for all or part of what the plaintiff is claiming from you, you can bring that person into this case rather than sue them separately afterwards. The insurer, the indemnitor, the subcontractor who actually did the work.
Puerto Rico’s version reaches further than the federal one: it also covers a person who is or may be liable to any party to the action, not only to the defending party bringing them in.
Aquí hay dos reglas. La 12.1 es la maquinaria, y es larga. La 12.2 es una oración que dice que la parte demandante frente a una reclamación puede usar la misma maquinaria.
La idea es sencilla aunque la regla no lo sea. Si alguien es o puede ser responsable ante usted por todo o parte de lo que la parte demandante le reclama, puede traerlo a este pleito en vez de demandarlo aparte después. La aseguradora, quien deba nivelarle, el subcontratista que hizo la obra.
La versión puertorriqueña llega más lejos que la federal: cubre también a quien sea o pueda ser responsable a cualquier parte del pleito, no solo a quien lo trae.
