Plain-English Summary
Section 814.75 works as an index rather than a price list. Each numbered item cross-references the statute that fixes that surcharge’s amount and describes when it applies — the bisphenol A surcharge under s. 100.335, the commercial fish protection surcharge under s. 29.984, the child pornography surcharge under s. 973.042, and so on through dozens of entries. The section itself doesn’t set a single dollar figure.
Some of the surcharges on this list apply broadly across many kinds of cases — the court support services surcharge under s. 814.85, the justice information system surcharge under s. 814.86, the jail surcharge under s. 302.46 (1), and the penalty surcharge under s. 757.05 among them. Others are narrowly tied to a specific regulatory subject: fishing net removal, wildlife violator compact membership, railroad crossing improvement, ignition interlock use, drug offender diversion, and more.
Every item is qualified by the phrase “if applicable.” A given case only incurs the surcharges tied to the type of claim, violation, or circumstance before the court — this section doesn’t create new obligations on its own, it collects the existing ones into a single reference point.
Section 814.75 has counterpart provisions for other kinds of cases. Section 814.76 lists the parallel surcharges for criminal actions specifically, while ss. 814.77 through 814.81 list narrower surcharge sets tied to forfeiture actions prosecuted under particular chapters — 23, 66, 345, 778, and 800.
Frequently Asked Questions
What surcharges get added on top of a Wisconsin court fine or forfeiture?
