Plain-English Summary

Every rulebook needs an official name and a short way to refer to it in briefs, opinions, and other legal writing. Rule 85 supplies both for Wyoming's civil procedure rules: the full name is the Wyoming Rules of Civil Procedure, and the standard abbreviation is W.R.C.P.

This is a housekeeping rule, but a useful one. When a filing or opinion cites "W.R.C.P. 12" or similar, Rule 85 is what confirms that shorthand refers to this specific set of rules, distinguishing them from criminal, appellate, or evidence rules that have their own names and abbreviations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does W.R.C.P. stand for?

Wyoming Rules of Civil Procedure. Rule 85 establishes that abbreviation as the standard short form for citing the rules.

Is W.R.C.P. the official name, or just a nickname?

The official name is the Wyoming Rules of Civil Procedure. W.R.C.P. is the citation form the rules themselves authorize for referring to that same body of rules.

Why does a rulebook need a rule just naming itself?

A clear, standardized name and abbreviation avoids confusion in citations, especially since Wyoming also has separate rules for criminal procedure, appellate procedure, and evidence that use their own abbreviations.

Does Rule 85 apply to any other set of Wyoming court rules?

No. It names only the civil procedure rules. Other rule sets, like the rules of criminal procedure, are named and abbreviated separately.

Can I cite a rule as just "Rule 12" without the W.R.C.P. abbreviation?

Common practice often abbreviates informally within a document once the rule set is clear from context, but the full citation form Rule 85 establishes is W.R.C.P. followed by the rule number.
