Pick a deadline, enter the date that starts it, and this tool counts it the way Virginia does. Virginia has no Rule 6: Va. Code § 1-210 governs, and it never skips weekends inside a period, however short. Only the last day moves off a Saturday, Sunday, holiday or clerk’s-office closure. Service by mail adds three days under Rule 1:7, and a paper e-mailed or handed over after 5:00 p.m. adds one. After a final judgment, Rule 1:1 gives the trial court just 21 days. Every result shows its work.

Advanced: additional non-court days

This tool applies Virginia’s thirteen legal holidays under Va. Code § 2.2-3300: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, George Washington Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day, Election Day every year, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas. A holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before; on a Sunday, the Monday after. A clerk’s office may also close for a local holiday, Christmas Eve, bad weather or a Governor’s order (Va. Code § 17.1-207), and each such closure counts as a legal holiday. Any day the Governor or the President appoints as a holiday is a legal holiday too (Va. Code § 2.2-3300). Add any such day here as YYYY-MM-DD. One trap the calculator cannot fix: an e-filing received on a Saturday is treated as filed the next business day, so it does not meet a Friday deadline.

What this tool does not compute

  • Offers of judgment. Virginia has no general offer-of-judgment rule or statute, so there is nothing to compute.
  • Post-trial motions as separate deadlines. Virginia sets none for a new trial, JNOV, reconsideration or costs; Rule 1:1’s 21 days govern them all, and that entry is modeled.
  • Local scheduling orders. The Uniform Pretrial Scheduling Order figures apply only where that order is entered; many circuits use their own.
  • General district court and juvenile and domestic relations district court procedure, except the appeal to circuit court.
  • Direct appeals from a circuit court to the Supreme Court, now limited to particular kinds of case.
