Ohio Civil Procedure Deadline Calculator

Computed under Civ.R. 6(A) and Civ.R. 6(D) · 83 deadlines across 9 categories

Pick a deadline, enter the date that starts it, and this tool counts it the Ohio way. Ohio kept a rule the federal courts dropped in 2009: for any period shorter than seven days, weekends and legal holidays inside the period are skipped. Longer periods count every day and move only the last one. Service by U.S. mail or commercial carrier adds three days to the period; e-mail and e-filing add none. Every result shows its work.

Advanced: additional non-court days

This tool applies Ohio’s legal holidays under R.C. 1.14: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Washington-Lincoln Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, plus any day the Governor or the President appoints as a holiday. A holiday on a Sunday moves to Monday; R.C. 1.14 has no Saturday rule, though county offices close the Friday before. Clerks often close the Friday before a Saturday holiday and the day after Thanksgiving, but those days are not legal holidays: a deadline moves off them only if your clerk’s office is actually closed, so this tool keeps the date and warns you. Civ.R. 6(A) also extends a deadline when the clerk’s office is closed for the whole day or closes early, for weather or any other reason. Add any such day here as YYYY-MM-DD.

What this tool does not compute

  • Local rules. Ohio’s trial courts are county and municipal courts, and their local rules can change motion schedules, e-filing cut-off times and closures. This tool applies the statewide rules.
  • Protection orders, domestic relations and probate (Civ.R. 65.1, 75 and 73), which run on their own schedules.
  • Childhood sexual abuse and other special limitation periods not listed here.
  • Removal to federal court. Use the Federal Deadline Calculator.
