Every calendar day counts, however short the period; only a last day that falls on a weekend or a court holiday moves. Michigan adds no days for mail or e-service: service by mail is complete when mailed. And watch the short fuses: the claim of appeal and post-judgment motions are due in 21 days, not 30 or 28. Advanced: additional non-court days
This tool applies the 13 court holidays of MCR 8.110(D)(2): New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. A holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before and one on a Sunday the Monday after, except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, which move to the Thursday before a Friday Christmas or New Year’s Day, and to the Friday before when they fall on a weekend. Lincoln’s Birthday and Columbus Day are statutory holidays but courts are open; the tool warns rather than moving a deadline off them. Add any local closure here as YYYY-MM-DD.
What this tool does not compute
- Local holiday orders and closures. A trial court may change its holiday list by local administrative order, and a court closed by order extends deadlines; this tool cannot know either.
- The tolled limitations date after a medical-malpractice notice of intent, which depends on case law.
- Chapter 3 special proceedings, landlord-tenant, domestic relations and probate timelines.
