Ch. 814: Court Costs, Fees, and Surcharges · Last amended 2007 · Last verified July 15, 2026

In one sentenceSection 814.69 sets what a court reporter charges per page for transcripts — a lower, county-paid rate for standard transcripts under Supreme Court Rule 71.04, a higher party-paid rate plus an expedite surcharge for transcripts under section 757.57 (5) — and defines exactly what counts as a page.

Text size

(1) A court reporter shall collect the following fees:
(a) For a transcript under SCR 71.04, a fee at the rate of $1.50 per 25-line page for the original and 50 cents per 25-line page for the duplicate. Except as provided in s. 967.06 (3), the fee shall be paid by the county treasurer upon the certificate of the clerk of court.
(b) For a transcript under s. 757.57 (5), a fee from the party requesting the transcript at the rate of $2.25 per 25-line page for the original and 50 cents per 25-line page for each copy. If the request is by the state or any political subdivision thereof, the fees of the reporter shall be at the rates provided in par. (a). (bm) If a party requests that a transcript under s. 757.57 (5) be prepared within 7 days after the request and the transcript is not required by supreme court rule or statute to be prepared within that 7-day period, a fee in addition to the fee under par. (b) of 75 cents per 25-line page for the original and 25 cents for each copy. The fee under this paragraph does not apply to a request made by the state or a political subdivision of the state.
(c) A reporter may make a special charge, pursuant to arrangement with the party requesting the same, for furnishing typewritten transcripts of testimony and proceedings from day to day during the progress of any trial or proceeding.
(d) For purposes of this section, a page other than the final page of a transcript shall consist of any 25 or more consecutive typewritten lines, double-spaced, on paper not less than 8 1/2 inches in width, with a margin of not more than 1 1/2 inches on the left and five-eighths of an inch on the right, exclusive of lines disclosing page numbering; type shall be standard pica with 10 letters to the inch. Questions and answers shall each begin a new line. Indentations for speakers or paragraphs shall be not more than 15 spaces from the left margin.

Plain-English Summary

Section 814.69 runs two transcript tracks. A standard transcript under Supreme Court Rule 71.04 is billed at $1.50 per 25-line page for the original and 50 cents per page for a duplicate, paid by the county treasurer on the clerk’s certificate, except as s. 967.06 (3) provides otherwise. A transcript under s. 757.57 (5) instead gets billed to the requesting party, at $2.25 per 25-line page for the original and the same 50 cents per page for each copy — unless the state or a political subdivision is the one requesting it, in which case the lower SCR 71.04 rates apply instead.

Want that s. 757.57 (5) transcript fast? If a party asks for it within 7 days and no rule or statute already requires that turnaround, an extra 75 cents per page applies to the original and 25 cents per page to each copy — though that surcharge doesn’t apply when the state or a political subdivision makes the request. Separately, a reporter may arrange a special charge with the requesting party for producing typewritten transcripts day by day while a trial or proceeding is still underway.

What counts as a billable page is spelled out in detail: at least 25 consecutive typewritten lines, double-spaced, on paper no less than 8½ inches wide, with margins no more than 1½ inches on the left and ⅝ inch on the right, not counting page-numbering lines, in standard pica type at 10 letters to the inch. Each question and each answer has to start a new line, and indentation for speakers or paragraphs can’t exceed 15 spaces from the left margin.

Unlike many neighboring fee sections in chapter 814, section 814.69 carries no note about a fee change effective November 1, 2026 under 2025 Wisconsin Act 179; its rates have stood since the history recorded for this section last touched them.
