Art. 2081.Applicability of Title

Article 2081 opens Book III of the Louisiana Code of Civil Procedure, the book devoted to appellate procedure, with a short statement of reach: the rules that follow in this Title apply to every appeal taken to the Louisiana Supreme Court and to the state's courts of appeal. It works as a scope provision, telling a reader up front what kind of proceeding the coming articles are built to control before getting into the details of how an appeal is taken, perfected, and decided.

The closing clause, "except as otherwise provided by law," leaves room for more specialized statutes that set their own appellate timelines or procedures for particular kinds of cases, such as certain administrative or election matters. Where a specific law conflicts with the general rules in this Title, that specific law controls; where no such law exists, Title I supplies the default framework for the appeal.

Article 2081 speaks only to appeals as later defined in Article 2082, not to supervisory writs. Louisiana's appellate courts also review some trial court rulings through supervisory writ applications under Article 2201, a separate and generally discretionary procedure that follows its own rules rather than the appeal rules this Title sets out.
