The court may adjourn as to other business while the jury is absent, but shall be open for every purpose connected with the cause submitted to the jury until it returns a verdict or is discharged.

Plain-English Summary

A jury's deliberations do not have to freeze the rest of the court's docket. Rule 1.929 lets the court adjourn as to other business while the jury is out, so the judge can move on to other matters rather than sit idle.

But the court cannot walk away from the case it just submitted. The rule requires the court to remain open for every purpose connected with that cause until the jury returns a verdict or is discharged — so if a question arises from the jury room, or the verdict comes back, the court has to be available to handle it.

Frequently Asked Questions
