§ 178.Punishment for contempt

Section 178 is the enforcement backbone behind Section 177. Section 177 lists what a judicial officer can order — obedience, testimony, oaths, protection of courthouse access — but an order without a way to enforce it is only a request. Section 178 supplies that enforcement mechanism: the power to punish for contempt, in the cases this code specifies, so that a judicial officer’s lawful orders carry real consequences when disregarded.

The section is deliberately spare. It does not itself define what conduct is contemptuous or how a contempt proceeding runs; it ties that authority back to “the cases provided in this Code,” meaning the contempt power is exercised within the framework the code sets out elsewhere, including the notice and stay protections Section 128 builds in for particular categories of contemnors.
