§ 1301.Construction of References to Section, Article Or Chapter

This section is a small piece of statutory bookkeeping, but it heads off a lot of possible confusion. Title 10 refers constantly to other sections, articles, and chapters, and this section fixes what those bare references mean when nothing else in the text says otherwise.

A reference to “a section” points to a section of the Code of Civil Procedure itself. A reference to “an article” points to an article within whatever chapter of this Title the reference happens to appear in. And a reference to “a chapter” points to a chapter of this same Title. None of that changes if a particular section spells out something different -- this is only the default reading.
